Closed to the outside world, they have preserved the culture, traditions and beliefs of ancient Balinese society.Their houses are symmetrically built in straight rows on either side, with communal buildings - dining halls, temples, kitchens, places for socializing, etc. - placed right in the middle. Usually human settlements develop naturally - a house here, a yard there, a path to the neighbor on the back street, etc. Tenganan is strung out by a thread.
