Bari is the capital of Puglia and the largest city in the region. Time and the people of Bari have shaped the image of the most authentic city of the Italian South. St Nicholas has watched over the city since the 11th century, when his relics were brought to Bari and the church of the same name was built.
The walk starts from Piazza Ferrarese, a place located between the old and the new town. We will pass along one of the city’s major boulevards, past the most famous public buildings and the oldest theatre in Bari, Teatro Comunale Piccini. Bari’s old town is unique for its authentic atmosphere – at the entrance, the town’s hosts make homemade pasta, the fruit and vegetable stalls in front of the houses always offer fresh goods, and in the narrow streets you can hear speech in so many languages that you feel transported back in time when merchants and shoppers from all over the world used to come here.
And to make the “Bari experience” complete, we’ll stop in front of the most famous bakery in town, offering focaccia (hard grain bread, with tomatoes and olive oil) and established back in 1508!

Polignano a Mare is a town built on imposing cliffs. In front of its gates used to be the Roman road “Via Traiana”. Nowadays, the coast is known for its crystal clear sea, its twenty kilometres of beach and the large number of caves carved into the rocks. The specific architecture complements the natural beauty of this town, known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic”. The rocky coastline of Polignano a Mare is full of natural coves that used to shelter fishing boats in winter and today attract an endless stream of tourists every summer. The terraces of the old town offer spectacular panoramic views, while the wind carries the sounds of the well-known song Volare – first sung by Domenico Modugno, born here. Here you can try an octopus sandwich, the city’s trademark cafe “Spechale” and a wonderful ice cream!

In the time of Emperor Hadrian, Lecce was moved 3 km to the northeast and given the name Lyceum. After the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, Lecce was conquered by the Ostrogothic King Totila. For five centuries, Lecce became part of the Eastern Roman Empire – Byzantium. The Normans conquered the city in the 11th century and it was later annexed by the Kingdom of Naples.

Depart the hotel for a visit to Matera, the city of the Moors, famous all over the world as a natural setting for many historical films. Matera is a unique settlement located in the province of Basilicata. Its origins date back to the Paleolithic times. At that time, its ancient inhabitants settled the natural caves in the canyon of the Gravina River. For centuries, they expanded their dwellings by digging deep into the rock or building stone anterooms for their amphitheatrically located shelters. The living conditions in the so-called SASI did not change significantly over the centuries, and in the early 1950s Italian intellectuals appealed for government intervention. With government funding, modern housing was provided to those living in the caves. The ancient part of the city remains uninhabited and people call it the ‘Dead City’. This continued until the cinema became interested in Matera. The natural “scenery” has been used by world-famous directors including Pier Paolo Pasolini, the Taviani brothers, Luchino Visconti, and Mel Gibson. Their films, especially the most popular The Gospel According to Matthew and The Passion of the Christ, reinvented Matera for the general public. UNESCO’s recognition was not delayed – the city was declared a World Heritage Site. The increased interest has provoked a reassessment of Matera’s potential as a tourist destination. With more serious funding, the sasses abandoned decades ago are now coming to life again. This time as shops, restaurants, enotecas and even luxury hotels. Investors’ ambitions have not changed their appearance and the distinctive stone creations retain their unique architectural appearance. Together with Plovdiv, Matera has been named European Capital of Culture in 2019.

Departure from the hotel to Alberobello – visit the “calling card of Puglia”. Alberobello is a town with so much special charm that it’s hard to know which country you’re in or which planet you’re on. The capital of the Trulli seems to transport you to the world of fairy tales. Trulli are small white houses with conical roofs. Built without any solder, they were one of the biggest tax scams of the Middle Ages. Near the main square is the church of Santa Lucia, as well as the city’s Territrio museum. The museum is made of 10 trulli united into one. In the museum one can see the history of the creation of the trulli and how their inhabitants lived in them in the past. Alberobello has other smaller museums that offer tourists souvenirs and almost everything that a farmhouse produces. The price includes a tasting of homemade liqueurs and sweets.
Locorotondo – one of the 100 most beautiful small towns in Italy, whose historic centre is built in an oval shape, hence its name. The town is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records because of the five vowel “o” in its name. It is a city of beautiful balconies most of which have numbers. The city is famous for its wines.
