The plan was for St. Isaac's Cathedral to become one of the most impressive landmarks of the then Russian capital St. Petersburg.
Today, the huge gilded dome of St. Isaac's Cathedral can be seen from all over the former Russian capital and has become its symbol.
Visitors to the cathedral also have the opportunity to climb the many steps (300 in number) to the base of the dome, where there is a special observation point offering a view of St Petersburg.
After its creation, St. Isaac's Cathedral was the main temple of the city and the largest temple in Russia in general.
St. Saviour's Cathedral - built on the spot where Emperor Alexander II was mortally wounded in 1881. From there comes the name of the church - "Church of our savior on his shed blood".
Its construction began in 1883 during the reign of Alexander III and was completed in 1907 during the reign of Nicholas II; next we visit the Peter and Paul Fortress, built by Peter I, where the Russian tsars are buried.

The Kremlin represents one of the best examples of the combination of typical Russian temples and medieval architecture.
It was built on the orders of Prince Yuri the Long-armed in 1156 as a wooden fortress.
Since then it has been rebuilt many times.
It received its present appearance in the 15th century under the direction of Italian architects after the headquarters of the Orthodox Church was moved to Moscow.
Visit the Cathedral Square flanked by the Cathedral of the Dormition, the Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the Annunciation Cathedral, the Archangel Michael Cathedral and the Twelve Apostles Cathedral.
Also famous are the largest cannon "Tsar top" and the largest bell "Tsar bell", made for the pleasure of the Russian tsars.
After lunch: visit the Armoury /additional charge/: it was founded during the reign of Ivan III under the name of the Grand Treasury.
In addition to weapons and equipment, the imperial crown, thrones of Russian tsars, gold and silver jewels, gifts from foreign diplomats, carriages, war trophies, and some of the world-famous Fabergé eggs are kept here.
Fabergé eggs are among the world's most expensive pieces of jewellery.
