This is why the first tourist train was launched in the cave as early as 1872. It ran on specially laid rails and was originally pushed by the guides themselves. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was already powered by a steam locomotive, and in 1945, the steam locomotive was replaced by an electric one. The cave was electrified even before Ljubljana - then the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Duchy of Carniola. Since its opening, the Postojna Pit has been visited by over 30 million tourists. Postojna is home to the endemic cave prothean, better known as the "human fish", which is the largest cave-dwelling amphibian in the world. Visit the Castle of Predjama, a unique fortress carved in rock and the seat of Knight Erasmus Lueger, the 15th century owner of the castle, known as the Robber Baron. They called the baron the Robin Hood of Slovenia... the legend tells how he robbed carriages passing through the area and gave the money to the poor. He hid in the castle, which, nestled in the rocks and inaccessible, was the perfect refuge. There was a secret passage in the castle, naturally carved into the rock. The secret route went to the top of the cliff and allowed Erasmus to enter and exit the castle undetected. Departure for Ljubljana. Tourist program in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. According to legend, the Greek hero Jason is believed to be the founder of Ljubljana. It tells how, together with his companions, the Argonauts, Jason stole the golden fleece from King Eet. Fleeing from him, they sailed from the Black Sea down the Danube, descended the Sava and from there reached Ljubljana. However, another obstacle awaited them - the dragon of Ljubljana. The fearless Jason threw himself into battle with the monster and defeated it. Today, at the top of the castle tower, the city's coat of arms depicts this mythical Dragon of Ljubljana. Walking tour of the old part of the city.Free time for a self-guided walk. Check in at the hotel. Overnight.
Day 3: Breakfast. Optional (extra charge) excursion to Lake Bled - the "Pearl of Slovenia". Optional visit to Bled Castle, built on a very solid rock. The history of the castle began in 1004 when Emperor Heinrich II gave it to the Bishop of Brixen, Albuin. The oldest part of the castle is the Romanesque tower, which was used for housing, defence and as a watchtower. Later, in the Middle Ages, newer towers were built and the fortifications improved. The remaining buildings were built in the Baroque period. The buildings are arranged around two inner courtyards connected by a staircase. In the upper courtyard there is a 16th-century chapel, renovated around 1700 when it was painted with frescoes. The entrance through the outer walls of the castle is by means of a drawbridge built over a protected moat. After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, territorially the town passed to Yugoslavia and the castle became a summer residence, first of the monarchs of the Karadjordjevic dynasty and later of Josip Broz Tito.It is possible to visit the island of Bled and the church on it. The island of King Bled is nestled in the middle of a glacial lake and has won the admiration of visitors from all over the world with its charm. The lake is located 50 km. northwest of the capital Ljubljana in a lovely mountain resort. The Church of the Assumption on the island is a three-aisled Roman basilica. In the 15th century it was rebuilt in Gothic style. In 1509 it was destroyed by an earthquake. It acquired its present appearance, in Baroque style, in the 17th century. The main altar features a statue of the Virgin Mary and has been there since 1747. The bell tower is from the 15th century, 54 m high and has three bells. One of them is known as the "Bell of Wishes". Legend has it that your wish will come true if you strike the bell in honour of the Virgin Mary. The tower has been renovated several times over the centuries. The island of Bled can be reached by boat, and 99 steps lead up to the church, which the newlyweds carry their future wives up. The bride must remain silent so that the couple can enjoy a long and happy family life. Return to Ljubljana. Overnight.
